"When I was a young horse, I thought if I wasn’t always good, I could at least be useful. Then I broke my leg." When Snoopy was three years old, he won the 2007 Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Association Trail Futurity. His trainer and his owner had his career mapped out—he would be campaigned around the circuit and qualify to be invited to the AQHA World Show. Then in 2008, Snoopy broke his left hind sesamoid, a small bone in the leg. This injury can mean anything from surgery to euthanasia. Surgery didn’t guarantee he could be ridden again, much less shown. In the tradition of Black Beauty, this is Snoopy’s own story, told from his special point of view. He tells of his youth, his training, his injury, and his long fight to return to the show arena, to prove he’s the same horse he always was, only different.

This is a very special book. Both my kids (10 and 12 year old horse lovers) are reading it right now and loving it too. It is really the author's memoir, as told by her horse, which makes a sweet, funny narrative and works as a great teaching tool.

As he tells his own story, Snoopy evolves from being a foal to a promising show horse, but he sustains an unexpected injury that changes everyone's plans. Snoopy is sweet and a little bit on the dumb side but he doesn't care, as long as he is loved. He is loyal, good natured and loves everyone, equine and human beings alike. He really wants to please people despite his enthusiasm for "fun games" such as resisting the halter, chewing on peoples' clothes and goat tossing <--that is not a typo!

It is also about an owner who wants to show her horse but she struggles with confidence and balance and reaches some very low points in her relationship with her horse. As Snoopy grows and evolves, so does his owner, who keeps learning more all the time, adapts, adjusts and invests a LOT of money to give her horse a good life whether or not he can fulfill her hopes and dreams.

In the end, my eyes were moist and I admired everyone including Snoopy and the horses and people who taught him to be a good and useful horse (most of the time.)

Good memoirs can be so educational without even feeling at all pedagogical. I got this book super cheap via Kindle, but I plan to stock our bookshelf with this one.

The importance (as well as the endless expense) of veterinary care.

People can adjust their/our expectations of individual horses and continue loving and working with them, even after being disappointed.

I was cheering for Snoopy and MomToo when I finished! Great story about overcoming a serious injury and very long rehab. Been there, done that. And, like Snoopy and Gayle, luck really didn't have anything to do with it. Just hard work, excellent veterinary treatment, and lots of loving care.
No, Snoopy is not a Super Horse, but this book is super! You'll enjoy getting to know Snoopy, and his friends. A fun and funny contemporary horse story, perfect for horse-lovers of all ages.
Whose perspective? Why, the horse's, of course! Gayle Carline's decision to tell her horse Snoopy's story from his own point of view is what makes this book unique, and she pulls it off quite well. The more I read of the book, the more I felt like I was really getting into Snoopy's head. I grew up on a farm with horses, but they weren't show horses like Snoopy. So I learned quite a bit about the world of show horses and found it interesting. But the book is really about Snoopy himself and the struggle he faced after breaking his leg. Snoopy's memoir has its light, humorous moments as well as some dramatic and touching ones. There were a couple of passages where I was moved to the point of tears. I became a fan of Gayle Carline after reading her Peri Minneopa mysteries (and if you haven't read those, for heaven's sake, go get them right now!), but I enjoyed this book as well, and I think anyone with even a slight interest in horses will, too. I recommend it.
This is not the type of book I normally gravitate to, but wanted to try something different. Loved that it was told from the horse's perspective. It was an enjoyable read, even with the sad parts about some of the animals. Definitely a book for animal lovers.
If you love horses, and everything that goes along with the daily life of a horse, you'll enjoy the read. Snoopy and his many antics will win your heart and you'll cheer him on as he learns to be the horse he was meant to be.
Following in the tradition of "Black Beauty," Gayle Carline leads readers through the lifetime development of a horse that has a close relationship to humans. Carline uses Snoopy's comments to point out how human actions affect horses, both positively and negatively. Anyone who is tuned in to horses, will really enjoy this book!
I love a good horse book and this one was quite good. I have only found one other that was written by the horse that was suitable for adults and it was great to find another. Just one small criticism, there were too many short sentences that made reading the book a little stilted. Having said that I still enjoyed this book.
